Disable Swap Files In OS X

A multi-user system is like the classic multi-user system you use on a server. You want to restrict as much as possible access to the system. Having a multi-user system uses more resources, so you might want to disable swap. This can be useful if you share the server with another company, or provide it as a service. Typically the service should be restarted when a user is logged in, but you might not want to do this. You can still do this with Computer Janitor or the equivalent on OS X.

You can use the following command to disable swap on a multi-user system, and thus limit the number of users to a number you specify. You can set this number to 0. You will then be able to boot the system with no swap file (yay!).

When you disable swap for all users, then each user gets their own swap file. I tested this with the disk i/o timing. Each user is running an infinite loop and it uses disk I/O. It works fine, and there is no delay in performance on any of the three test machines.

As a side note, I found that a user, upon being added to the system, quickly starts to use swap. I have not figured out why. This is probably related to the fact that users typically get the free app but a multi-user system does not.
