Thank you for your message. I am aware of the problems caused by the use of old/new font styles in Malayalam scripts. I am no longer involved in the digitization programme. But one of my predecessors in that programme was told that they had to use the existing font style as the fonts provided with ISM and Srilipi were not appropriate for on-screen use. That is why they decided to keep on using the existing font style. The conversion of old fonts to new font styles has caused a lot of damage. It would be better to keep the old font for Malayalam. I am setting up a research team to look into this. There is no going back now. The old font style is being used in all Malayalam publications. I hope this is a temporary situation.

Dear Sirs,

I am sorry to hear of the deterioration in the quality of the Malayalam font. I agree with you that “it will be better to keep the old font for Malayalam”. But these are technical problems. The process of developing a new font is a very lengthy one. We need to have a new font in place while the new font is being developed. This will take several years. In the meantime, it may be possible to convert the script in the existing font to the new script using the existing “character set”. This will in fact be a better solution. There will be new fonts for all the other languages in due course. But it may take 10 years. We need to wait for several more years. The process of developing a new font is a very lengthy one. And by the way there are other scripts like the Brahmi script which also face similar problems.
