Netflix premiered a new feature called "creation playlists" that allow users to create playlists of their favorite movies, TV shows, etc. This idea was a "a lot of fun" for members of the Netflix forums. In April 2013, Netflix started to automatically make playlists of these type of things with titles that were added to your queue. Yet, even with these changes, Netflix didn’t offer as many playlists as other social networks.[375]

The major problem with that new feature was that the playlists are too large and the content is organised by title rather than more intuitive genre and subgenre groups.[376] For example, they might have a playlist for comedy, but they’re actually a group of various different comedy selections: stand up, sketch, musicals, etc.[377] When it comes to playlists, the only way to get that information is to look at the alphabetical listing, but because all of those lists were put together at random, it’s difficult to know what’s best to watch next.[378]

The problem they face is that playlists are a huge time sink. People would spend hours making playlists but then only watch a minute or two of their choices. To counterplaylists, Netflix changes them up every single day, which is one of the reasons people stick with them.[379] The other is because people realising that the system will organise things depending on your tastes, so if you’re into action movies, the algorithm will stop showing you comedy and family movies. That’s why they need to keep changing them up so people don’t care. But if they don’t change them up every day, then people get bored with the algorithm not organising them well.

They could also make playlists more personal. People who are into horror would be able to create a playlist called, "Horror Movies You Will Love.” In fact, the playlist is already there waiting for them. It will give them that instant gratification that they were looking for that they haven't yet had.
