The Eye of Sheerian grants the wearer the ability to count to 25 by the number of times each individual LED flashes. If you're trying to get the high-end of the color spectrum, this is fantastic. For example, if you want to count down to red, the LEDs would have to flash in the following order: red, yellow, green, blue, purple, white, red, yellow, green, blue, purple, white,.... and so on. 25 LEDs flashing out of order creates a rainbow effect. You don't have to use real colors, though. For example, this would work with numbers too. How many times would you have to flash each LED to get to zero?
I've also tried the WiFi-enabled solution from Wistron , but the one I tried was not blue-white-red-green (so far as I can tell). It also has some issues with volume and on/off. On the bright side, it works with Google Home (so far as I can tell), but its input matrix takes a bit of work to get to that point. Weighing all this against its suggested price tag of $15, it seems like a no-brainer not to go this route.
Long story short: you can get a lot of blue-white-red-green color from just a few cheap LEDs, and you can get a lot of creative options from soldering things together. If you just want to run a single Arduino-compatible strip of LEDs on a breadboard, you can probably get something together that works.

One of the drawbacks to this approach was that we needed to recompile every time we made even a small change to the code. This slowed everything else we were doing down and because we couldn't always have someone waiting for the application to finish building. 827ec27edc
